John,
We don't have to tell you. This is a trying time for our country. We are facing a global pandemic, a collapsing economy, depression level joblessness, rising poverty, and homeless and hunger levels that are rising exponentially.
But, together, we will get through this.
The first step is to make sure millions of Americans don't become homeless during a pandemic. After all, how can you "shelter in place" or follow "stay at home" orders if you don't have a home?
That’s why CHN is rallying our national allies to protect millions of vulnerable people against evictions in the midst of a national crisis.
Your help today will allow us to launch a campaign as early as this week to prevent millions of Americans from losing their homes. Make an end-of-month contribution to CHN today to demand Congress act.
More than 1 in 4 people (26%) who live in households where someone lost earnings did not pay or deferred rent in April.
Another rent bill is due on Monday. Without immediate action, there will soon be a wave of evictions and a spike in homelessness throughout our country.
Congress must act to prevent this tragic outcome by providing at least $100 billion in emergency rental assistance; implementing a uniform, national moratorium on evictions; and providing $11.5 billion to address the needs of people experiencing homelessness. These urgently needed provisions are included in the House-passed HEROES Act. Now it’s time for the Senate to act.
Together, we’re fighting for a robust legislative package to address poverty and homelessness in the midst of the pandemic by broadening the moratorium on evictions, and including emergency rental assistance to prevent people and families from falling behind on their rent.
So far, more than 40 million Americans have lost their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Every time someone loses a job, that means the chances rise significantly they will fall behind on their rent and face the prospect of becoming homeless.
In less than three months, on August 23, federal protections from evictions covering fewer than half of tenants will end. There is no time to waste. It is critical that the Senate follow the House of Representatives’ lead, and pass legislation that would prevent these essential protections from expiring and broaden them to cover all tenants.
If you can, support CHN with an end-of-month contribution to fight to prevent millions of Americans from becoming homeless in the middle of a pandemic?
Thank you for your support during this challenging time,
Deborah Weinstein Executive Director, Coalition on Human Needs
