FEBRUARY 2025
|
Dear Friend,
Despite the political chaos and furor of the world, February was a busy and productive month as we came together to build community, challenge corporate power, reckon with historical racial injustice, and more.
In a moment of particularly acute and egregious attacks on efforts to upend systemic racism and increase racial diversity and equity we recognized Black History Month. The Corporate Accountability Black Collective challenged all of us to learn about and honor the ways that Black people have shaped the world that we live in.
We used our social media channels to reflect on the leadership of Black activists and communities in social justice movements throughout history and in the present in a campaign we called Preserve. Empower. Inspire: Building Justice with Black Narratives and Tradition in the Fight for Justice and Equity. It explored how Black history influenced our work and highlighted the organization’s commitment to racial justice. You can check out the campaign on Corporate Accountability’s channels: Facebook, Twitter/X, Instagram, LinkedIn, and BlueSky.
And finally, Ann-Michelle, the Director of the Black Collective Program, shared her own thoughts on why Black History Month is so important -- not just for what it can teach us through history, but also as a way to shape our present and future.
Here are just a few of the other ways you have been making an impact this month:

FORCING VEOLIA TO PAY FOR ITS ROLE IN THE FLINT WATER CRISIS
|
In February Veolia, the world’s largest private water corporation, announced a $53 million settlement of lawsuits related to its role in the ongoing Flint water crisis. The corporation was hired to study Flint’s water system and told residents their water was safe despite privately acknowledging the potential for lead contamination -- all while chasing a contract to privatize the city’s water system. This settlement demonstrates the power of people demanding justice, but also falls short of covering the harm done to Flint residents, and fails to hold Veolia legally accountable. Read more about the settlement, and then donate to Flint Rising as they continue to push for justice and accountability for the people of Flint who are still dealing with the impacts of the water crisis.

Powering the movement to challenge corporate power under Trump
|
Trump has signaled that he intends to wage full-fledged attacks on people and democracy for the benefit of corporations. But we won't let his disastrous agenda go unchecked. So to meet this difficult moment, we launched the Freedom From Corruption Campaign to recruit 50 new donors so we have the resources needed to take on Trump and his corporate allies. And to meet the urgency of this moment, a generous member agreed to match all gifts with an additional $150! Together we rose to the challenge and unlocked $7,500 in additional funds. If you haven't given yet, you can still chip in. Give now!

COMING TOGETHER TO TAKE ACTION WITH THE POP CORPS
|
In January, just before Trump took office again, we launched the People Over Profit Corps, or POP Corps: a community of people challenging the corporate takeover with fierce, urgent action and joy. We've already held our first few meetings, and we'll continue to meet every month (on the third Thursday of each month at 8 PM Eastern) to take action, learn about critical issues, and have fun together. And the secret ingredient to our success is you! Whether you're looking to plug into a community and take action regularly or get the training you need to launch and win corporate campaigns that impact your community, the POP Corps is your home. Members also have an exclusive online channel to stay connected between meetings and be the first to know about urgent actions. It’s time to POP the corporate bubble and put people first. Learn more and sign up if you aren’t already part of the fun!

Corporate Accountability stops transnational corporations from devastating democracy, trampling human rights, and destroying our planet. We are building a world rooted in justice where corporations answer to people, not the other way around -- a world where every person has access to clean water, healthy food, a safe place to live, and the opportunity to reach their full human potential.
