Dear Friend,
In the newsletter this week...
* Donald Trump Addresses Congress
* Trump and Starmer's White House talks
* Do migrants on benefits pay council tax?
* Government tracker
But first...
There has been a lot going on this week: President Trump’s address to Congress, the ongoing war in Ukraine and the US administration’s decision to impose tariffs on a number of countries.
One thing that might have slipped under the radar has been a correction by Labour minister Sarah Jones MP. In a debate in the House of Commons she said: “The International Monetary Fund and the OECD predict that the UK will be Europe’s fastest-growing economy over the next few years.”
We’ve looked at several versions of this claim and it isn’t what the IMF and OECD projections show. We contacted Ms Jones about this and she has now officially corrected the record ([link removed]) in Parliament. She is the first minister in the current government to correct the record after being contacted by Full Fact.

We’re still waiting for a number of other government ministers to correct the record, including Chancellor Rachel Reeves and the Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
This work is important because trust is strengthened in our politics when those in power hold their hands up and correct their mistakes.

** Donald Trump Addresses Congress ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
[link removed]
US President Donald Trump last night delivered his first major address to Congress since beginning his second term in office, and spoke about his plans for the US economy, immigration and Ukraine.
Here are some of the claims Mr Trump made that we’ve fact checked:
**
US has spent “perhaps $350 billion” on support for Ukraine
------------------------------------------------------------
* We’ve not found any evidence to support this figure ([link removed])
**
Construction of the Panama Canal “came at a tremendous cost of American blood and treasure” and that “38,000 workers died” building it.
------------------------------------------------------------
* Estimates suggest this figure is too high if looking specifically at American deaths ([link removed])
**
US “suffered the worst inflation in 48 years, but perhaps even in the history of our country, they’re not sure”
------------------------------------------------------------
* US inflation hit a peak in 2022, its highest point since the 1980s, but well below the record set in 1920 ([link removed])

** Trump and Starmer's White House talks ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
[link removed]
The Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer met US President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday, in their first face-to-face meeting since the latter’s return to office.
We’ve taken a look at some of the claims made during a Q&A with reporters in the Oval Office—on aid to Ukraine, tariffs and an invitation for Mr Trump to make a second state visit to the UK.

** Do migrants on benefits pay council tax? ([link removed])
------------------------------------------------------------
[link removed]
We’ve looked at a Facebook post which appears to suggest migrants receiving benefits don’t have to pay council tax.
Migrants are not automatically exempt from paying council tax, but asylum seekers being housed by the government don’t have to pay it.
