Mississippi is surrounded by states that empower parents with School Choice. Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee, and Louisiana all allow families to choose the schools that best fit their children’s needs.
President Donald Trump, the most pro-School Choice president in history, recently urged every state to adopt policies that give parents this fundamental right.
Yet yesterday, Delbert Hosemann killed a bill, HB1435, that would have allowed public to public School Choice.
Mississippi misses because Mr Hosemann killed School Choice bill HB1435
Previously, however, Mr Hosemann had publicly implied support for public to public school choice. What changed?
Perhaps when implying support, Mr Hosemann never really had any intention of supporting the bill? Maybe he thought he could imply support, but then quietly kill the bill and hope no one would notice?
Well, you’ve noticed. The more than 80,000 recipients of this email across Mississippi will notice. And the tens of thousands of families wondering what their “conservative” Senate leader actually stands for will notice too.
Speaker Jason White, a steadfast advocate for School Choice, put it best in response to this news: “At some point, your actions have to match your words. You can’t keep saying you’re for something and continue to kill it.” Well said.
There’s still a glimmer of hope. Representative Jansen Owen, another heroic champion for parental rights, has taken the bold step of incorporating the text of HB1435 into another bill.
School Choice could still pass—but only if enough Mississippians recognize what’s been happening at the Capitol this past week, where Senate leadership has undermined sound conservative policy.
We need your voice now more than ever. Help us spread the word and hold our leaders accountable. Together, we can fight for the future our children deserve.
