This is developing quickly... a federal judge in Montana has voided nearly 440 oil and gas leases on 336,000 acres of land, ruling that the Trump administration violated the law protecting habitats for endangered species in the West.
The oil and gas industry is in a tailspin — this is the second time in three months that a federal judge has invalidated drilling leases illegally sold to them by the Trump administration.
They're not going to let this go without a fight — a massive fight to re-secure this land for drilling operations is already underway.
We need to organize in a major way, and fast. We need to ensure that they have no chance of winning an appeal, and we need to put serious pressure on Congress to ensure that any future leases MUST have a 30-day public comment and full administrative protest period. To pull all of this off, we need your help.
A donor has agreed to triple match every contribution to LCV until midnight tomorrow. Even $5 will go a long way!
FOR IMMEDIATE REVIEW: TRIPLE MATCH STATUS
Please confirm:
%%FIRST NAME% — this is a fight we can win, I promise. The environmental movement has successfully blocked some of these leases already, and if we give it everything we've got, we can stop them again.
The bad news is that this is not the only fight we're up against right now. Hitting this goal is so, SO important. Here are some of the reasons why:
- When we stopped Trump's attempt to score bailout money for the oil and gas companies in the first coronavirus relief bill, he turned around and added executives from the top oil producers to his official task force to re-open the country. They are still pushing hard to get a bailout. You can stop them. Make a donation to LCV today »
- Under cover of the coronavirus pandemic, the Trump administration has rolled back EPA safety measures regarding the release of mercury and other toxic pollutants into the air. These are pollutants that have already been linked to higher COVID-19 death rates all over the country. Now, the Trump administration is moving to make other public health rollbacks permanent. This is quite literally a matter of life and death. Make a gift to LCV today to help us force the EPA to do its job »
- These attacks on the environment disproportionately affect low-income folks and communities of color, who are already more likely to live in areas with high levels of air pollution, and therefore have a higher risk of dying from this virus. This virus is already targeting our most vulnerable communities, and Trump is deliberately making the problem worse. Please, make an emergency gift today. Even $5 makes a huge difference »
- On top of all of this, we must not forget that the most important election of our lives is coming up in a few short months, and it has never been more crucial that we elect environmental leaders who believe in science, at all levels. The environmental movement MUST be ready. The only way that's going to happen is if we continue to organize and mobilize, on ALL fronts. We need YOUR help, and we need it now »
Friend, if we can reach our goal of $100,000 by midnight tomorrow, we will be in a much better position to take on all of those fights.
I am proud of everything we have already accomplished this year, despite everything we've been up against. But we can't stop fighting, especially now. And we can't continue this fight without supporters like you.
Please — make a contribution today, while your gift is still being triple matched. Even $5 makes a huge difference!
We'll keep you updated as this story develops. As always, thank you, friend, for everything you do for the environment.
Sincerely,
Gene Karpinski
