This week, I released a message for 2020 graduates. This won’t be your typical graduation speech, because these aren’t typical times, but I hope these words offer encouragement and a bit of inspiration for students graduating from school
I also doubled-down on my belief that members of Congress should lead from the front and show up to vote. Too many of my colleagues on the other side of the aisle abandoned their most basic duty - voting - by abiding by an unconstitutional proxy voting scheme from Nancy Pelosi.
Follow me on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram for regular updates and news you can use. As always, thank you for your support.
Now, here’s your brief:
MY MESSAGE TO 2020 GRADUATES
This isn’t the typical graduation for 2020 seniors this year, so I wanted to give graduating students a commencement speech that matched the moment.
2020 graduates may feel like they’re being robbed of everything that makes their last year of school memorable - prom, parties, graduation with their friends. But students graduating from school this year are being gifted something that many previous graduates did not receive: perspective.
And that perspective will mean something throughout their lives, and give them strength, resilience, and fortitude. In my speech, I talk about the lessons in fortitude that I’ve learned throughout my life and offer words of advice to young people about to start a new chapter in their individual journeys.
MEMBERS OF CONGRESS SHOULD BE DEMONSTRATING LEADERSHIP
This week, the House implemented “proxy voting.” More than 200 years of precedent were thrown out the window in partisan fashion just so Democrats could work from home this week, having a proxy represent the interests of their constituents.
But this is more than a violation of the Constitution, this is a violation of basic leadership. Our grocers, nurses, doctors, truckers, and other essential workers don’t have proxies to fill-in for them. They show up to work for the rest of us.
Members of Congress should hold themselves to the same standard. But Democrats don’t believe they should have to lead from the front and show up to Washington to vote. It can only be summed up in one word: cowardice.
While the coronavirus pandemic has certainly received much of our attention lately, flooding remains a top concern for Houstonians. With hurricane season just around the corner, that concern is growing stronger each day.
That’s why I held a virtual town hall last week with more than 400 Houstonians to discuss flood mitigation efforts in Harris County. I’m working hard in Congress to ensure our community has the resources to complete flood mitigation projects and ensure that we are better prepared for future floods.
