John, We can’t secure fair maps around the country without ensuring a fair count in the census. But the census is under a multi-pronged attack, and it’s a three-alarm fire: 1. Hours into Donald Trump’s second term, he repealed an order that affirmed how everyone in the country should be counted in the U. S. Census. Trump’s action on the census could lead to a blatant attempt to undercount communities with higher populations of immigrants and undocumented people. 2. Republican state attorneys general also sued to stop the 2030 Census from counting all U.S. residents. And the federal judge presiding over this case is a Trump appointee with a track record for upholding gerrymandered maps. 3. In recent weeks, massive Census Bureau data files that are normally publicly available disappeared from the website. Some of those files have come back online, but this raises concerns about the integrity of this critical data now and going forward. We’re fighting back. Our mapping and analytics team is working hard to compile records of past census data so we can closely watch for any changes. And we know we can defend the census because the fair maps movement has protected it before — stopping Trump from adding a citizenship question in his first term.
Thank you so much, The NDRC Team
