John,

Last night was Trump’s first speech to Congress of his second term. He
spoke for 99 minutes (the longest one in history), but he had very little
to show for it.

What I hoped—but didn’t expect—to hear yesterday was an affirmative vision
for how President Trump will work to tackle families’ biggest challenges
and make life more affordable.

Instead, what we got was deflection, distraction, and deception. He was
more interested in finger pointing than in rolling up his sleeves. He
spent more time talking about trans people than about bringing down
prices. And, he lied about everything from climate change to Social
Security.

To the extent there was real substance in the speech, his signature
policies were imposing poorly thought-out tariffs (which will raise costs
for families) and empowering Elon Musk (who is relentlessly attacking
workers and recklessly dismantling our government).

We deserve leaders who actually, well, lead. That means seeing the real
challenges Americans are facing, taking responsibility, and getting to
work to deliver solutions.

Sadly, last night was yet another reminder that Donald Trump only looks
out for himself.

––Katie
