John,
Today, Community Justice’s Executive Advisor, Greg Jackson, testified before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance hearing on “The Right to Self-Defense,” sharing his personal experience with gun violence prevention and the need for continued investment in a public health approach to build safer communities.
As the former Deputy Director of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention and a Special Assistant to President Biden, Greg has spent over a decade fighting for policies that save lives—through advocacy, local government, and at the federal level. |
His testimony comes at a critical moment. We know that: -
Nearly 140,000 Americans are shot each year.
- Gun violence is the leading cause of death for youth in America.
- Homicide is the leading cause of death for pregnant women in America.
-
Gun violence is now a leading cause of newly disabled Americans.
Because of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention and the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, we saw real progress:
✔️ 3% decline in violent crime and a nearly 12% decline in homicides from 2022 to 2023 (FBI Crime Reporting data)
✔️ Violent crime decreased by 10.3 percent; homicides decreased by nearly 23 percent from 2023 to 2024 ✔️ Drastic reductions in the spread of ghost guns ✔️ 700+ gun traffickers charged, making communities safer But there’s still so much more to do. And Community Justice is committed to making sure that investments in community violence intervention and the expansion of the public health approach continue. Community Justice exists to push for policies that protect our communities. But we can’t do it without you.
