The Trump administration just announced that they are rolling back major portions of the Endangered Species Act (ESA), making it easier to remove species from the endangered species list, enabling Big Polluters to exploit protected habitats, and weakening protections for the plants and animals that remain. Scientists around the world have been sounding the alarm: Due to climate change, we're facing an unprecedented global mass extinction — more than half of ALL species could face extinction by the end of the century.

This is simply too egregious for us to stay silent — our ability to protect North American wildlife is at stake. There's a clear path forward: Members of Congress are back in their districts — and that means the environmental movement needs a major show of force across the country to demand that they pass legislation stopping the Trump administration's attacks on the ESA as soon as they get back. This is just the latest move by Trump and Bernhardt to give away protected places to Big Polluters. From trying to open up the Grand Canyon to uranium mining to rushing to sell out the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the Trump administration has proved that they will stop at nothing for fossil fuel profits.

But we can't let them do the same to the ESA. The ESA is one of our greatest conservation successes — the law has saved 99% of listed species from extinction. And as climate change gets worse, so many more species need our help. If Trump and Bernhardt's plans move forward, our ability to protect species like the spotted seal, northern spotted owl, and southern sea otters could be completely wrecked. Without the ESA, these critical animals will face extraordinary threats like drilling or mining in their habitats.

If the last few months have showed us anything, it's that when the environmental movement shows up and fights back together, we win.

Earlier this summer, the House passed a budget that increases funding for the EPA and environmental programs — a major victory, especially after Trump pushed for a massive 31% cut to the EPA.
