Dear John,
Despite the Trump Administration’s strong support of religious freedom, people of faith are still facing major discrimination in the workplace.
And that is nowhere more evident than the discriminatory firing of Valerie Kloosterman.
Valerie, a physician’s assistant, served her community at Michigan Health for 17 years. She regularly received exemplary reviews, and supervisors called her “professional,” “very ethical,” and a “pleasure to work with.”
In the summer of 2021, she was required to attend mandatory DEI training.
When she was unable to affirm statements about gender that violated her Christian beliefs, refer patients for sex-obscuring surgeries or use pronouns that conflicted with human biology, Valerie asked for a religious accommodation.
During follow-up meetings, a Michigan Health diversity representative called her “evil,” blamed her for gender dysphoria-related suicides, and told her she could not take the Bible or her religious beliefs to work.
And after all of that, Michigan Health fired her.
Last month, Valerie’s case was heard by the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Watch this quick update to find out what happened at the Sixth Circuit and to get the latest information on our cases awaiting review by the Supreme Court.

No one should be forced to abandon their religious beliefs to remain employed.
It’s not only wrong; it is unconstitutional.
But that didn’t stop Michigan Health from firing Valerie for her religious beliefs.
That’s why First Liberty has joined Valerie in the fight to not only hold Michigan Health accountable for its actions, but to protect faith in the workplace for medical professionals everywhere.
But we can’t win without your support. Your best gift today will give our legal team the resources they need to stand up to corporate giants like Michigan Health.
Will you join us on the frontlines and fight back against religious discrimination?
Yes, I will join the fight for faith in the workplace!
Grateful for you,
Kelly
