Dear John,

As Latin America is becoming the new epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic, ICE has been deporting people who have tested positive to almost every country in the region, including Haiti, Guatemala, Honduras and Brazil. These countries are already doing poorly in handling COVID-19; the deportations are worsening the pandemic.

For years immigration activists have demanded the abolishment of ICE due to its massive human rights violations and cruelty, particularly towards children and vulnerable populations. At CODEPINK we echo the calls to abolish ICE, and as that movement grows, we must push Congress to start stripping ICE of its powers.

There are two bills in Congress to help protect immigrants detained by ICE and stop deportations. Click here to urge your representative and senators to support them! <[link removed]>

H.R. 6537, the FIRST Act, would release most people from ICE detention and would severely limit immigration enforcement during the pandemic. The Haitian Deportation Relief Act would suspend deportations to Haiti until the pandemic passes in both countries.

Neither of these bills are enough. Deportations to all countries, whether in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa or Asia, should be immediately halted. ICE is a stain on this country that cannot begin to heal so long as the agency exists. We’re not there yet on having Congress act to abolish ICE, but these bills are reflective of growing public sentiment against detention and deportation, especially during the coronavirus pandemic.

ICE detention centers are becoming hotspots for COVID-19 and most countries in the hemisphere are not handling the pandemic well. Tell Congress to stop ICE deportations and release detainees! <[link removed]>

Two weeks ago, Haitian economist Camille Chalmers was the guest on CODEPINK’s weekly WTF is going on in Latin America & the Caribbean webinar. <[link removed]> He detailed how poorly the Haitian government is responding to the pandemic, and expressed concern about deportations of COVID-19 positive patients to the country. We’re sending this alert in solidarity with Camille, with Haiti and with all immigrants. We must stop ICE from making this global crisis worse.

In solidarity,
Leonardo, Michelle, Medea and Teri
