Hello, Friends —

On Monday, the 210-foot U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Diligence set sail for Pensacola, which will soon be its home port. The vessel has a storied history of counter-narcotics operations, securing our borders, and saving lost Americans at sea. The Diligence will be a great addition to our military community in Northwest Florida, and I look forward to seeing what they will accomplish.

For more information, see here, and to the crew of the Diligence, welcome to Northwest Florida!

TAX HOLIDAY

Florida’s 2020 Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday began yesterday (Friday, May 29), and will extend through Thursday, June 4, 2020. During this period, certain items related to disaster preparedness are exempt from sales tax. It’s always important to be prepared, especially now that hurricane season has begun. For more information, and to see a list of tax-exempt items, please visit this website.

HURRICANE SEASON

Monday, June 1 marks the beginning of Hurricane season in Florida. There is no better time than the present to prepare for future storms. After the devastation caused by Hurricane Michael, I can’t emphasize enough the need to be ready and prepared if another disaster strikes.

Here are a few tips to get started:

  • Talk with household members about what to do if a hurricane makes landfall nearby.
  • Create an evacuation plan.
  • Build an emergency kit in an easy-to-carry container with items including water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, a battery-powered radio, first aid kit, etc.
  • Be informed. Learn about your community’s hurricane response plan.
Northwest Florida is strong, and we have always rebounded quickly from past storms. Nevertheless, we must stay vigilant, and do what we can to keep our families, our homes, and our communities safe during hurricane season.

ARE YOU LISTENING?

Listen to my podcast, “Hot Takes with Matt Gaetz,” for a behind-the-scenes look into the latest news from the Washington swamp. Recently, I’ve talked about legislation considered by the House, the threat posed by “Big Tech,” legislation I’m drafting, and more. On the topic of ‘Big Tech,’ I appeared on Tucker Carlson Tonight on Thursday to talk about Twitter’s recent attempts to influence the 2020 election. Watch it here:

Gaetz: ‘Twitter Is Interfering with an Election’

“Thursday on Fox News Channel’s ‘Tucker Carlson Tonight,’ Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) warned of the perils of waiting to confront Big Tech and its efforts to play a role in politics as we approach the November elections.”

Republicans working on legislation to strip Twitter of federal liability protections

“Gaetz said on his ‘Hot Takes’ podcast that while he is ‘not in favor of a special attack on Twitter,’ he does think Section 230 protections for the company should be reevaluated. ‘I am currently working with my Republican colleagues on the [House] Judiciary Committee to draft legislation to say that if you are going to opine to the truth or falsity of that which is put on your platform for the sake of its viewers, you do not get the protections of Section 230. You are not a platform. You are doing something else. You are editorializing,’ Gaetz said.”

Matt Gaetz Goes to Bat for Navy’s Tactical Combat Training System II

“Last week, U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., wrote a letter in support of the Navy’s Tactical Combat Training System II to Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition, James Geurts.”

The Republican hoping his ‘Trump speed’ podcast will inspire the next generation of conservatives

“Congressman Matt Gaetz knows his new podcast series, ‘Hot Takes with Matt Gaetz,’ is a self-laid political minefield, a chronological catalogue of his unfiltered gut reactions to everyone and everything making headlines in Washington. ‘An opposition researcher’s dream,’ the Florida Republican’s chief of staff tells him of the programme. Mr. Gaetz is pulling no punches.”
