This email contains material discussing the impacts of mental health. If you or a loved one is struggling, do not hesitate to reach out to the National Suicide Hotline at 988.John,
We need to have a conversation about mental health.
American adults who report being diagnosed with depression at some point in their life reached 29% in 2023. Suicide rates of men under 30 have risen by more than a third since 2010. Data shows that we can’t ignore this issue, especially for men and boys.
As the father of two wonderful children, I want both my son and daughter to be able to grow up with all the opportunities possible.
We need to start from the ground up. In the words of the great Marylander Frederick Douglass: “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.”
This starts with investing in quality education for our youngest Marylanders, fostering an environment where students feel supported and empowered to speak up. They need to be equipped with the tools to understand how to cope when things don’t feel right.
We’re already making great strides.
In 2023, we launched a first-in-the-nation Service Year Option for high school graduates to help them find their path and purpose.
In 2024, we made sure that we rewarded our servicemembers through policies to support both veterans and military families.
And in 2025, I will be directing my entire administration to begin implementing targeted solutions to uplift our men and boys.
One of the key aspects of this is making sure that we remove the barriers that are holding many of them back — especially our returning citizens.
Mental health can take a huge toll on anyone, but with the proper care that burden can be lifted. It just requires the right support, which we are aiming to make more accessible as we continue to invest in our state.
John, no one needs to suffer in silence. Everyone deserves a chance to thrive, and our goal is to make sure that everyone does.
Elevate,
Wes
