John, it’s no secret what “make America great again” means and has always meant. It means ensuring that all signs of equity, equality, and diversity are erased from the culture.
It means upholding systems of white supremacy that ensure that white people thrive and that Black and other marginalized people continue to be treated as second-class citizens.
MAGA lawmakers are systematically attempting to erase Black and Brown folks from the fabric of this country, culturally, historically, and through policy.
It looks like making the official language of the United States English, changing the Gulf of Mexico to be called the Gulf of America 🙄, banning books, destroying DEI initiatives across the country, and now trying to erase Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington, D.C.
The late and legendary John Lewis at BLM Plaza in DC in June of 2020
This is a blatant display of federal overreach, hypocrisy, and white supremacy masquerading as governance.
The same politicians who preach about “states’ rights” and “limited government” are now attempting to trample on the will of D.C. residents—over 700,000 people, the majority of whom are Black and Brown.
This isn’t just an attack on local autonomy—it’s a racially motivated attempt to erase the strides Black people have made in demanding justice.
This is exactly why D.C. must be granted full autonomy and statehood.
Republicans are using the language of “government restraint” to justify their real goal: wiping away a powerful symbol of resistance, progress, and the collective demand for racial justice.
John, please add your name to our petition now to fight back against MAGA white supremacy and protect this culturally significant symbol of Black resistance.
Unlike the GOP’s empty rhetoric about limited government, local self-governance, and democracy, we actually uphold these values by amplifying the voice of the people, not silencing them.
Whether they whitewash our murals or march in our protests, we will not stop until we fulfill our liberation agenda. DC will not be muted, and we will not be erased. Black Lives Matter—yesterday, today, tomorrow, and always.
In solidarity,
Black Lives Matter
Our grassroots movement is pushing for Black liberation every single day. We are striving to create a world where Black people do so much more than just survive. It’s time we thrive.
As an organization one of our biggest hurdles is consistency.
A recurring contribution of anything you can afford goes a long way as we plan for the months, years, and even decades ahead. This is the most effective way for small-dollar donors (like you) to power our Black liberation work.
Will you make a recurring contribution of $5 or more today so that we can keep building momentum for our movement?
