Dear John,
Last evening, Linda McMahon was sworn in as the new Secretary of Education. She is now the Cabinet-level official charged with enforcing federal civil rights laws in schools.
But as she stepped into the role, McMahon already has taken action to start reviews of all programs at the Department. It’s no secret that her boss has wanted to eliminate the Department and downsize civil rights enforcement in schools.

It doesn’t have to be this way. GLSEN has called on Secretary McMahon to reevaluate her priorities and center the needs of students, including the more than two million LGBTQ+ students who rely on federal civil rights enforcement to build safer learning environments.
Serving all students requires leadership. McMahon needs to follow and fully implement existing laws that protect students, instead of catering to the whims and latest pronouncements of the White House.
GLSEN will continue to keep the pressure on. We’ve called on McMahon to recognize that Title IX protects LGBTQ+ students, expand and strengthen civil rights enforcement, and get out of the way of state and local efforts to adopt inclusive learning. All of these steps will improve school safety for LGBTQ+ youth and address top education priorities by reducing absenteeism and improving youth mental health.
We need your help to hold McMahon accountable and keep the Education Department focused on what students need. GLSEN is working to raise our collective voice and build support for marginalized students and our network of teachers, chapters, and GSA student groups. Help us protect the needs of LGBTQ+ students. Your support is absolutely essential to our work.
