LULAC MOURNS THE PASSING OF LINCOLN DÍAZ-BALART, CHAMPION OF FREEDOM AND JUSTICE

Nation's Oldest and Largest Latino Civil Rights Organization Remembers an American Whose Life Was Devoted to the Ideals of Liberty and A Voice for All

Washington, D.C. – The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) joins the nation in mourning the passing of former U.S. Congressman Lincoln Díaz-Balart, a towering figure in the Cuban American community and a relentless advocate for democracy, human rights, and immigrant justice. Díaz-Balart, who passed away at the age of 70 after battling cancer, leaves behind a legacy of a life dedicated to the fight for freedom in Cuba, comprehensive immigration reform, and the empowerment of Latinos across the United States.

Born in Havana, Cuba, Díaz-Balart's life was shaped by his family's exile from their homeland following the rise of Fidel Castro. Carrying the spirit of courage, he emerged as a leading voice for those silenced by oppression. He used his platform in Congress from 1993 to 2011 to champion democratic reforms and protect the rights of the most vulnerable. He authored the democracy requirement for the lifting of U.S. sanctions against the Cuban dictatorship. He played a pivotal role in the passage of the Nicaraguan Adjustment and Central American Relief Act, offering thousands of immigrants a path to stability in the United States.
