Listen to your body. Stay connected to loved ones. Try not to compare your pandemic lifestyle to others. These and many other tips are included in a special project on mental health practices we just published.

In a poll conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation in late March, almost half of adults said the pandemic has negatively affected their mental health. Reports have warned of rising rates of severe distress, a spike in suicides and increased overdoses.

The pandemic has brought mental health to the forefront of the national conversation, which is a step in the right direction. Yet within the flood of news stories on mental health since March, relatively few have included people’s personal experiences.
We want to help fill that gap. That’s why we teamed up with Pittsburgh-based mental health advocacy organization Steel Smiling and began reaching out to our neighbors. We heard back from 14 local leaders, artists and activists with track records of championing mental health. Each weighed in on how they’re coping, why their story matters and how they would encourage others who may be struggling.

We hope you find their insights valuable as you navigate your own mental and emotional well-being during this period. While Mental Health Awareness Month is coming to an end, our responsibility to prioritize mental health remains.
