Throughout our nation’s history, we have seen far-right leaders go to extraordinary lengths to bypass democratic principles — all in their relentless pursuit of power.

From onerous voting requirements to partisan and racial gerrymanders that allow politicians to choose their voters, they have systematically worked to undermine the fundamental right of Americans to have their voices heard at the ballot box.

I often say there is no “off year” in the fight for fair electoral maps, and 2025 is no different. The work we do now will be critical to advancing the fight for our democracy in 2026, 2028, and beyond:

* Our affiliate, the National Redistricting Foundation, is actively involved in court cases that could affect the makeup of up to eight or even nine congressional districts — where we must make sure voters are fairly represented.

* We’re preparing to stop potential efforts by partisan actors to steal more congressional seats through extreme gerrymandering — including in Ohio, where Republicans will oversee a process to draw new congressional maps this year.

* And we must stay ready to protect the 2030 Census from efforts to tamper with it, to ensure an accurate count and fair representation.
