Now, because of Elon Musk's crusade to tear down wildlife agencies, there are fewer dedicated staff left to tend to these gentle sea creatures.

Day by day the real-world impacts of Musk's so-called Department of Government Efficiency's war on wildlife are coming into clearer focus — and they're horrifying.

Mass firings at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are a disaster for imperiled wildlife.

Those firings included two park rangers at Crystal National Wildlife Refuge, the only refuge created specifically to protect manatees.

The cuts come during a critical time. Seeking relief from the winter cold, manatees gather by the hundreds in the refuge's warm waters.

But they've already been pushed to the brink by a mass die-off. While the death rate has slowed, the weakened condition of mother manatees, after years of near-starvation, may be why so many calves have perished.

Taking away help for these treasured marine mammals is heartbreaking and morally wrong. The Center's been in court for years trying to get manatees more protection.

But now we're pointing our legal fight directly at DOGE, too. Last week we sued the Trump administration — and Musk — for the public records on its activities.

And yesterday, in the first suit challenging DOGE's efforts to eviscerate the agencies charged with protecting the environment, we sued five cabinet-level agencies to stop the Musk wrecking ball.

The Center won't sit by while misguided zealots pick apart the federal agencies that keep the natural world — and people — safe.

Threats to the environment are coming from all directions. And we're pushing back at all those points of attack.
