President Trump is making no secret of his efforts to fire non-partisan career civil servants and replace them with unqualified political sycophants.

It’s clear he wants to remove anyone who may disagree with him, or stands up to him—and we’re already seeing it happen at a staggering pace:

Trump’s administration fired more than a dozen prosecutors who worked on criminal cases against him, dismissed 18 inspectors general, fired an FEC commissioner and the head of the Office of Government Ethics and fired thousands of newly hired or promoted federal employees.

John, to be clear, the removal of these watchdogs and federal employees is not a normal part of a presidency—and in many cases, it’s illegal.

This plan goes back years: Trump signed an executive order in October 2020 which created a new “Schedule F” employment category for federal employees.

Tens of thousands of civil servants who serve in roles deemed to have some influence over policy would be reassigned as "Schedule F" employees—stripping them of their employment protections and making them far easier to fire. President Biden rescinded the order when he was in office, but Project 2025 revived the plan and now Trump is trying to implement it again through a new executive order.

John, the goal is clear: Trump wants to replace the tens of thousands of experts who make sure our air is clean, our air travel is safe and our tax refunds are paid with political loyalists.

But his executive order is unlawful—it violates workers’ due process rights and exceeds the president’s constitutional authority. That’s why we’re representing Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility alongside Democracy Forward in a new lawsuit challenging this executive order.

If Trump’s executive order is allowed to stand, it would lay the groundwork for Trump to continue to fire federal employees for no reason, and appoint loyalists who will put his whims over the law.
