Hello,

In this week’s edition, I pose reasons supporting the efforts of writing, which are, in turn, reasons to think. Then, human rights activist, political writer, and founder of Rebel News Ezra Levant joins me to discuss his experience with the World Economic Forum and the United Kingdom’s tilt toward authoritarianism. From the archives, I look back on three different discussions that explain foundational concepts regarding narcissism.

Advice

Why You Should Write

When I taught at university, I often explained to my students why they should write: You write in order to think something through. When you write, you can start by asking yourself a question — hopefully an important question and one you want an answer to. If it is not an important question, then why bother answering it? And if you do not want the answer, then why bother asking the question?

If people stumble when they are writing, thinking, speaking, or interacting with others, it is because they have not identified an important question, nor one about which they care. Then, the answer is not an attempt to find an answer; it is an attempt to appear as though you are seeking an answer or to rationalize an answer you have already assumed to be the case. Neither of those responses is interesting or helpful.

You write so you can address a topic (i.e., a question) that is important to you, one that announces itself as important, so that you can think it through. That way, you properly act it out. After all, you look at the world through ideas, and then act them out in the world. You can facilitate doing so through writing.

How To Be At Peace With Dying

Implicit in Socrates’ “Apology” is the suggestion to imagine that you lived your life fully. Living your life fully would mean that you say what you have to say when you have to say it, and you do what you need to do when you need to do it. It would mean you avail yourself of every opportunity that comes your way. You would exhaust yourself in the service of your life. Then, maybe by the time you were old, you would have had enough. And you could just let go.

Signs You're Dealing With A Narcissist

Segmented into three parts, this clip begins with a past lecture in which I discuss a psychopath’s ability to manipulate. Virtually anyone can be fooled by a psychopath. The second part is from a conversation with Dr. Keith Campbell, a professor of psychology at the University of Georgia. I explain the core of a narcissist as being someone who manipulates to achieve unearned reputational status. Then, the clip concludes with a segment from Joe Rogan’s podcast.
