** UN Tax Convention Organisational Session

GATJ Secretariat and regional members at the UN Tax Convention negotiations in New York.

From the 3rd to the 6th of February 2025, the Global Alliance for Tax Justice (GATJ) participated ([link removed]) in the organisational session of the United Nations Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation (UN Tax Convention). This session kicked-off a historic process set to deliver three legally binding agreements by mid-2027: a Framework Convention and two early protocols.

LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN
Red de Justicia Fiscal de América Latina y el Caribe (RJFALC) member Luis Moreno, and Director of International Taxation at Latindadd, participated ([link removed]) in the negotiations of the UN Tax Convention. RJFALC shared ([link removed]) the opportunities and challenges of a UN Tax Convention for the Global South.

AFRICA

Tax Justice Network Africa (TJNA) hosted members of the High-Level Panel on illicit financial flows from Africa for an exclusive Fireside Chat ([link removed]) on Monday, February 24, 2025. This significant discussion commemorated 10 years since the release of the High-Level Panel report.

ASIA

Tax and Fiscal Justice Asia (TAFJA) and APMDD commended ([link removed]) the good start to the February intergovernmental negotiations to write the United Nations Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation (UN Tax Convention).

NORTH AMERICA

Canadians for Tax Fairness (C4TF) has been pushing back ([link removed]) against their government abandoning the shrinking of the capital gains loophole and looking back ([link removed]) at their Prime Minister's neoliberal legacy in the wake of his resignation.

The Financial Accountability & Corporate Transparency (FACT) Coalition shared a statement ([link removed]) by Executive Director Ian Gary on the layoffs at the IRS. These layoffs threaten to undo recent progress at America’s tax agency, which began a hiring wave in 2022 after losing nearly half of its personnel specializing in complex tax investigations and enforcement cases over the preceding decade.

EUROPE

Tax Justice Europe (TJ-E) Co-Coordinator, the European Network on Debt and Development (Eurodad) held the Eurodad Conference 2025. GATJ’s Secretariat and members were in attendance, participating ([link removed]) in discussions on tax justice.
