[link removed] [[link removed]] Dear Friend,

As your Attorney General, my job is to protect you and all Coloradans from bad actors. To that end, my team has returned over $500 million to consumers through refunds, restitution, debt relief, and credits.

This week, we highlight that work as we celebrate National Consumer Protection Week and raise awareness about the risks consumers face and the steps we can all take to protect against fraud.

A key ally in our efforts to protect consumers is the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), which was created in response to the 2008 financial crisis. This agency has returned billions of dollars to consumers and ensures compliance with consumer protection laws overseeing big banks, lenders, credit card companies, and mortgage servicers.

The former head of the CFPB, Rohit Chopra, joined us in Colorado last fall and offered this piece of advice to consumers: “If you’re in a dispute with a bank or a company, one of the things that often will get their attention is if you say to them or write to them, if you don’t solve this, I’m filing a complaint with the state AG or the CFPB. Trust me, they will respond.” And as the Colorado Sun reported after his visit:

The CFPB has served as a valued partner to us. That’s why, in response to the Trump Administration’s effort to disband the CFPB, I joined a multi-state coalition of 23 Attorneys General to support the agency in court. Now is not the time to undermine protections for consumers—it’s the time to stand up for what’s right.

Consider a current case, for example, that we are bringing with the CFPB where a company harmed vulnerable Coloradans by promising debt relief, charging exorbitant fees, and leaving people worse off as a result. We also collaborate with CFPB in other ways, such as working together on rules that protect Coloradans from junk fees and unfair lending practices. Eliminating a valuable watchdog like the CFPB only benefits bad actors. Responsible companies that treat their customers fairly deserve to compete on a level playing field—one where everyone plays by the rules.

Thank you for helping me stand up for consumers and support an environment that rewards responsible companies while holding irresponsible ones accountable.
