Migrant families are being held longer than federal guidelines suggest in a large tent facility in California, report Fola Akinnibi and Rachel Adams-Heard of Bloomberg

The center is operated by United States Customs and Border Protection, which recommends families with children be held in such facilities no longer than 72 hours, but in some cases the detention time in this facility is extending for more than 10 days, sources told Akinnibi and Adams-Heard.

A recent Senate Judiciary report outlines how these facilities are not equipped for long term stays and put families with children at risk for disease and other dangers.

"The longer children remain in these facilities, the more the risk to their mental and physical health increases," said Neha Desai, director of the National Center for Youth Law.

Separately, the uncertainty for unaccompanied children caused by the Trump administration’s recent confusing directives on access to legal representation is "callous," writes Francis Wilkinson, a columnist for Bloomberg Opinion

On February 18 the administration sent a memo halting legal services for immigrant children through contractors. Three days later the directive was rescinded, generating confusion and uncertainty, Wilkinson highlights.

During a recent media briefing run by the nonprofit KIND, experts shared the impact that such confusion will have on children and the people trying to help them, reports Jeff Brumley of the Baptist Global News

On this regard, Alvaro de la Cruz-Correa, an immigration lawyer in Spokane, Washington, told Rachel Spacek of OBP: "It feels like the system is winning when it comes to making the lives harder for both immigrants and their lawyers."
