Today is the 94th anniversary of the Star Spangled Banner becoming our national anthem.
THIS DAY IN HISTORY
A National Anthem

On March 3rd, 1931, 94 years ago today, an Act of Congress<[link removed]> made the Star Spangled Banner America’s national anthem.
Several years after the War for Independence, France and England were engaged in an ongoing conflict that drew America back into war. Known as the War of 1812<[link removed]>, it lasted until 1815.

During that war, England invaded Washington, D.C., setting fire<[link removed]> to the Capitol, White House, and other government buildings. The British then marched to Baltimore and bombarded Fort McHenry<[link removed]>.

Attorney Francis Scott Key<[link removed]>, while aboard a British ship to negotiate the release of a captured friend, witnessed the attack on Fort McHenry. Inspired by the courageous defenders of that fort, he penned several lines about the experience.

His writing was published as a poem<[link removed]> titled “Defence of Fort M’Henry" [sic]. Set to music<[link removed]>, it became known as “The Star Spangled Banner.”
Today, let’s celebrate our national anthem by learning even more about this remarkable story!

In that hour of deliverance and joyful triumph, my heart spoke..."Does not such a country, and such defenders of their country, deserve a song?”
