It’s true: The work we do this year could determine who controls the House of Representatives after next year’s midterm elections. The GOP has to defend a razor-thin majority, but they could protect or even expand it by engaging in more gerrymandering in the months to come.

By fighting for fair maps in 2025, we can help make sure Democrats have a fair shot at winning back control of the House in 2026, ending the GOP trifecta in Washington, and putting a real check on Donald Trump’s power. 

While Republicans continue working to undermine our democracy and fair representation, it’s going to take this entire movement to ensure the National Democratic Redistricting Committee has the resources to fight back. As Trump’s extreme agenda continues to unfold, the need for fair maps and fair representation has never been more urgent.

Ahead of last year’s House elections, the GOP was able to gerrymander three more districts in their favor in North Carolina — and Republicans only won control of the House by three seats.

This year, Republicans could draw new maps in Ohio that tilt three more Democratic-held seats in the GOP’s direction. We have to be ready to fight back for fair maps in Ohio and around the country right now if we want a fair chance at taking back the House next year.

The NDRC is playing the long game to ensure we’re ready to respond to any and every gerrymandering threat by Republicans. But what we do now will determine how we’re able to respond to ensure Americans have a representative map.
