Introducing our newsletter about the issues *Worth Fighting For* and how Tom and this team are staying in the fight — plus some inspiring stories to keep us fueled through it all!

The Latest

Team, *so much is at stake this year.* People are fighting to survive during this pandemic; communities are fighting for justice that is long overdue; and we’re all fighting to preserve the planet. The battles we fight and continue today will impact the November election and beyond. Here’s the latest from Tom, and keep reading to see how you can take action too.

* 📰 California Governor Gavin Newsom appointed Tom as his Chief Advisor on Business and Jobs Recovery. Tom has been working with business leaders, community activists, and college professors to develop an equitable, green, and forward-thinking economic strategy for California’s COVID-19 recovery. *Read more here.* ( [link removed] )
* 🙏 In partnership with BET and United Way and thanks to Tom’s personal matching of donations, *Team Tom raised more than $200,000* to provide help to the African American community that has been hit disproportionately harder by this pandemic due to existing inequities and injustices. *Thank you for your support — you can still make a donation by clicking here ( [link removed] ).*
* ♻️ Tom joined the advisory board for *Climate Power 2020* , a collective initiative of green groups and climate activists fighting to turn the tide this election cycle.

This week also brought yet another reminder of the deadly consequences of white supremacy. George Floyd was killed by police officers — like Breonna Taylor and so many others. We must speak up about police misconduct, racially motivated violence, racism, and the weaponizing of white privilege. *We must continue to fight for broad reforms in policing and take the time to discuss these issues with our family and community.*

This team has really stepped up to support their communities during the pandemic, and we’ve loved hearing about all you’re doing. Shoutout to Tom supporters who are giving aid to education while school doors remain closed, like *Sandra B. from FL* who donated school supplies to students in need; *Tobin R. in NY* who is hosting online art classes for students with special needs; and *Lauren S. in FL* who is giving free coding classes to young people online.

Plus, so many reached out to help frontline workers. Thank you to *Pam R. in AR* and her daughter for sewing disposable masks for their local hospital — they've made 326 so far! Thanks also to *Mary L. from IN* for baking bread for health care workers with her church, and *Linda S. of IL* for making thank you cards with local Girl Scouts for health care staff.

Cheers to everyone for going the extra mile to help each other out — from donating to volunteering to making masks (and even hand sanitizer!), this community is *amazing*.

Worth A Review: Trump’s corrupt environmental rollbacks
-------------------------------------------------------

*16 million Americans.* That’s how many lives are at risk with the Environmental Protection Agency’s new policy on perchlorate ( [link removed] ) , a water contaminant tied to fetal damage that EPA administrator Andrew Wheeler decided not to limit. The EPA’s crusade to reverse environmental protections creates leniency for polluting corporations and has created toxic communities, especially for communities of color and folks in low-income neighborhoods.

These polluter giveaways also have major negative economic impacts. Take Trump’s reversal of fuel economy standards ( [link removed] ) , which regulate the gas mileage and tailpipe pollution of new vehicles. In the report put out by his own administration, the rollback could cause as many as *1,000 premature deaths* , eliminate *nearly 13,500 jobs a year* , and cost as much as *$22 billion in net damage* to the American economy. These protections are being undone at the same time that research shows pollution makes people more vulnerable to the coronavirus.

While the country — and scientific community, including health experts — are grappling with the pandemic, the Trump administration continues to push forward with the reversal of eight air pollution and emission rules, for a total of *100 environmental protections rollbacks* ( [link removed] ).

*Tom’s take:* The Trump administration is weakening the economy and further endangering American lives ( [link removed] ) during this public health crisis just to support fossil fuel CEOs and corporations. These rollbacks worsen existing environmental injustices and strip away the small progress we had made. If we’re going to address the COVID-19 pandemic and tackle the climate crisis, we must trust science — and stop putting corporate interests over American lives and our future.
