Olympic View Transfer Station closed Sunday, March 2, due to unplanned compactor outage
Customers also asked to avoid bringing garbage to the Recycling and Garbage Facilities until further notice
OVTS
The Olympic View Transfer Station [ [link removed] ] will close again on Sunday, March 2, 2025, due to an unplanned compactor outage caused by a broken hydraulic pump. The recycling area at the transfer station will remain open during regular operating hours. Tires, large appliances, and electronics will also be accepted as usual.
We hope to fully reopen the transfer station on Monday, March 3, 2025, but this timeline could change. After the compactor is repaired, facility operators need to clear the tipping floor to make room for customers.
*New Recycling and Garbage Facility limitations*
We also ask customers to please avoid bringing garbage to the Recycling and Garbage Facilities [ [link removed] ] until further notice. If you cannot wait, please limit your garbage load size to three cubic yards or less. Garbage collected at these smaller facilities is taken to Olympic View Transfer Station, which is currently near capacity. Recyclable materials will be accepted as usual.
Please note that these smaller facilities charge by volume. They are not designed to accept large loads of garbage, and large loads will be significantly more expensive at these facilities.
We sincerely regret this service disruption. Please stay tuned for updates at:

New garbage compactors coming soon
Olympic View Transfer Station uses a garbage compactor to fill large intermodal containers with garbage collected from homes and businesses. The containers are then transported by rail to the Columbia Ridge Landfill in Arlington, Oregon.
The current compactor is over ten years old and is nearing its end-of-life, which causes frequent outages and facility closures. This year, Kitsap County will take two steps to correct this issue:
* We will install a second garbage compactor, which is already on-site. Installation is scheduled for early summer 2025.
* After the second compactor is installed, we will replace the current compactor. We have already purchased this machine, which costs around $5 million and takes eight months to manufacture. We expect to receive it later this year.
