If you subscribe to Democracy Docket, chances are you are an avid consumer of news. Yet, even for those of us who diligently pay attention, it can be difficult to stay up to date on Donald Trump’s latest attacks on democracy.
Part of this is a failure of the legacy media itself—much of which is now more accurately described as oligarch-controlled media. However, it is also part of a deliberate Republican strategy to spread lies and disinformation about what is happening.
This is often referred to as the “flood the zone” strategy. It’s worth revisiting exactly what Steve Bannon said when he coined the phrase in 2018: The Democrats don’t matter. The real opposition is the media. And the way to deal with them is to flood the zone with shit.
I started Democracy Docket—and this newsletter in particular—to combat exactly this strategy. Each Saturday, I highlight the most important news of the week that may have been buried under the flood of misinformation the GOP has intentionally released.
This week is a prime example of why this effort is so necessary.
