Good morning John,
Today, I am in Enniskillen with members and activists from across Northern Ireland for our Spring Policy Conference. This is more than just a gathering of friends and colleagues - it is a statement of intent. It reinforces who we are as a party - a party of ideas, of solutions, and of action. We are a party that listens to our grassroots, values their input, and ensures their voice shapes what we do.
As I approach one year as Leader, I reflect on the progress we have made together. The DUP is more interconnected than ever. Every level of our party is working with renewed energy and determination. That sense of purpose is what strengthens our resolve to stand up for Northern Ireland and to deliver on the issues that matter to our people.
Whilst we plan and build for the future, in recent weeks, we have seen familiar battles return to the fore. The right to justice for innocent victims of terror, the ongoing attempts to rewrite history, and the relentless efforts to drag those who served in our armed forces through the courts. These issues cannot and will not be ignored. Our message to the Government is clear: the door to justice must remain open for innocent victims, and vexatious prosecutions of soldiers who defended this country must be addressed. We will not allow history to be rewritten to suit a one-sided narrative that seeks to legitimise terrorism and vilify those who upheld democracy and the rule of law.
While others seek to rewrite the past, we remain focused on shaping a better future. Our Executive Ministers are using their portfolios to deliver real and tangible improvements for the people of Northern Ireland.
Paul Givan, as Minister for Education, has prioritised easing pressures on working families through the introduction of a childcare support scheme. He is taking steps to tackle the soaring cost of school uniforms, and he is leading a curriculum review to ensure our young people leave school equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed. Special Educational Needs (SEN) provision is also under review, ensuring that every child - regardless of their circumstances - can achieve their full potential.
Gordon Lyons has been equally proactive, tackling benefit fraud to protect taxpayer money, delivering on our housing plan to make homeownership more accessible, record funding for musical instruments for bands and support for Northern Ireland football. He has also introduced the groundbreaking Sign Language Bill, which represents a major step forward for the deaf community in Northern Ireland - ensuring recognition, rights, and inclusion.
At the very top of government, our deputy First Minister, Emma Little-Pengelly, has played a key role in ensuring the Executive now has a clear Programme for Government - a roadmap that will define the priorities and policies of the administration. That focus is critical as we seek to make government work, deliver stability, and build a stronger Northern Ireland. In two weeks, Emma will continue her sterling work in representing Northern Ireland when she travels to Washington.
Of course, achieving progress is never straightforward. We have always faced opposition, but I will lead from the front.
At today’s conference, we will engage in open and honest discussions about the challenges ahead. Our focus remains on delivering for the people of Northern Ireland - on improving services, strengthening our economy, and ensuring fairness in every aspect of government.
I’m off now for a coffee on the banks of Lough Erne and to meet those gathered here in Fermanagh. But I leave you with an invitation. If you want to be part of shaping Northern Ireland’s future, there is a place for you in the DUP. Get involved, make your voice heard, and help us build a better and stronger Northern Ireland together. You can join by clicking this link ([link removed]) .
