John,
Sometimes in politics it is difficult to know who is right and who is wrong. This is not one of those moments. What President Trump did to Ukrainian President Zelenskyy in the Oval Office today was wrong. We know it, and the world knows it.
If you missed it, Trump and Vice President Vance scolded and embarrassed Zelenskyy in front of the cameras for the world to see, accusing him of ingratitude and warning him that Ukraine would be on its own if it did not strike a deal with Russian President Putin soon.
This is part of a pattern of recent behavior. For weeks, President Trump has been critical and even hostile toward Ukraine while making excuses for Putin and Moscow.
Many Americans want a rapid end to the war in Ukraine and share President Trump’s concerns about the costs to American taxpayers and the potential for the conflict to spiral out of control. But it is another thing entirely to blame Ukraine for starting the conflict and for not doing more to end it.
Our late chairman and co-founder, Joe Lieberman, was well-regarded for his moral clarity regarding America’s place in the world. He once said, “There is no reason to trust Putin. He has proven himself to be a liar, a killer, a thug, and a war criminal.”
That remains clear today.
Last November, America voted for a new style of leadership in the White House. We also know that it is entirely within President Trump’s right to drive a tough deal and be unconventional in his pursuit of peace and American interests.
And yet, it cannot be argued that the public humiliation of our partner in the Oval Office advances the interests of America. Such a display diminishes our power and undermines our values before the world.
