[1]Mark Kelly for Senate
Team, it’s Mark Kelly.
It might seem like everything is spinning out of control right now, but the truth continues to be the truth. Here’s a reality check:
Russia invaded Ukraine, and Putin is a dictator. That’s the truth.
President Zelenskyy is defending his people, and Putin is targeting and killing them in schools and hospitals. That’s the truth.
Ukraine is fighting for their right to freedom and democracy, and Russia is fighting to reclaim the empire they lost when the Soviet Union fell. That’s the truth.
And, after that horrendous display in the Oval Office today, Putin and his cronies in Russia are popping champagne, America is weaker on the world stage, and we are all less safe.
That is the truth.
I’ve been to Ukraine. I’ve met with President Zelenskyy many times, including earlier today. Ukrainian pilots have trained on the F-16 in my state. I’ve hosted those pilots in my office. One of the pilots I met was killed in action, defending his country.
Everyone wants to see this conflict end, including me. But the kind of peace that emerges matters, and it’s essential that it leaves Ukraine in a position of security and that the aggressor — Putin — pays a price for his crimes. After today, it feels like we’ve almost fully switched sides. It’s incredibly disappointing, but it’s not over.
I am going to continue pushing help to the Ukrainians. I am going to continue to press the Trump Administration, including Secretary Rubio and National Security Advisor Waltz, to get back in the room and work this out. And I’m going to need you to continue to speak out about this, and be public and vocal in your support for Ukraine. It’s not only essential to their future, but to our own national security.
A free, unoccupied, and democratic Ukraine not under constant threat from Putin will make all of us safer, and each of us needs to do whatever we can to help them win this war.
Thank you, really, for reading.
Mark
