John,
There is a lot of talk about how Donald Trump’s policies are going to hit rural Americans and lower-income households harder than most. And for a lot of folks, they assume that most of them are Trump supporters, so they write them off. But to do so would be a huge mistake, and ensure Democrats remain in the minority for generations to come. What rural people and the working class need from Democrats right now is more than just a handful of policies that sound nice but fail to address the ins and outs of their daily lives.
I myself live in a rural town in Nevada, and Will who serves on National Ground Game’s board is a farmer from rural Missouri. (Will is both a farmer and a seasoned political hand—he is known on social media as “Your Favorite Rural Campaign and Elections Expert.”)
Winning back working class and rural voters to the Democratic Party isn’t just abstract political strategy to us—it’s about improving the lives of our neighbors, friends, and the 99% of Americans who are getting screwed daily by the billionaire class and massive corporations.
From massive tax cuts that benefit the already-wealthy, to crippling tariffs that would devastate entire communities living paycheck to paycheck: the Trump agenda is hostile to the working class.
But in our conversations, we win when we tell voters what we are fighting FOR: fully funded public education, better pay for teachers, affordable child care, quality jobs with dignity, and healthcare for all.
The time to act to win folks over and strengthen this core mission is now. If we work to organize right now, and work to win these upcoming special elections, we can peel back Trump’s grip on power in Congress.
