Trump and Republican cuts hurting Minnesotans and damaging state budget
DFLers are continuing to work to protect Minnesotans from the chaos, cruelty, and incompetence coming out of the Trump-Musk Administration. This week, legislators joined the Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault, Minnesota Indian Women’s Sexual Assault Coalition, Violence Free Minnesota, Minnesota Alliance on Crime, Mending the Sacred Hoop and Minnesota Children’s Alliance to highlight the real world consequences of the callous federal cuts for victim support services such as domestic violence shelters and sexual assault victim advocates.
Recently, the Office on Violence Against Women halted all 2025 funding opportunities. While the Trump administration was ordered to unfreeze these funds, many organizations have reported that they are still barred from seeking these critical funds. Some are now looking at cutting staff and services. Trump’s cuts to this and other federal programs funding victim services will have devastating consequences for victims' support and violence prevention efforts in Minnesota.
On February 25, Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives passed a budget resolution that guts Medicaid to give trillions in tax cuts to big corporations and the ultra-wealthy. Medicaid is the largest single source of health insurance in Minnesota, serving seniors, children, families, and people with disabilities. About 1.4 million Minnesotans, including 650,000 children and 125,000 people with disabilities, depend on Medicaid to get the care they need.
The Minnesota Legislature’s most important job this year is to balance the state budget, but what we’re seeing from the Trump-Musk administration and a Republican Congress is putting that work in serious jeopardy. These extreme policies will break Minnesota’s budget and the impacts will be felt by every single person in the state. Minnesota Democrats have a better plan: let’s build an economy where all Minnesotans have opportunities to succeed, not just the wealthy and a powerful few.
