Trump Admin's Impact on Surf Ecosystems | 2025 Film Fest
Iceland's Endangered Wave
------------------------------------------------------------
Hello, fellow wave savers! Protecting, stewarding, and defending surf ecosystems is never-ending work. But that is why Save The Waves Coalition exists. Here are some of the things we have been working on to ensure surf ecosystems around the world can be surfed for years to come. For more stories from the Coalition, check out our blog here. ** Unacceptable Actions by Trump Admin Harm Surf Ecosystems and the Environment
------------------------------------------------------------
At Save The Waves Coalition, we recognize that we are in an unprecedented moment in history. The budget cuts and threats to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the National Parks System and the California Coastal Act are unacceptable.
Where we stand is clear: we oppose the Trump administration’s actions and intentions on environmental policies that harm, and will continue to harm, our mission of protecting surf ecosystems.

At Save The Waves, we unequivocally stand for:

PROTECTION: We believe in the protection of our unique and irreplaceable surf ecosystems and coastlines. We must retain the right and responsibility to preserve these critical habitats for all communities (and future generations) to enjoy, not for private interests to benefit from.

ACCESS: The ability to access outdoor recreational spaces as public lands and natural sanctuaries. Access is more than a physical space: access to data and information is also a right.

COMMUNITY: People need their connection to the ocean and to each other, especially during these times, and surf ecosystems are the shared arena that foster that connection.

** STWFF is Returning This Summer!
------------------------------------------------------------

Since its creation in 2008, STWFF has focused on one thing: curating to inspire and educate others to protect our coastlines. Our film festival has featured nonfiction and documentary films on surf and water sports, travel and adventure, conservation and climate. In 2024 the STWFF had 21 stops across 8 countries with proceeds benefiting local and global conservation projects.

Stay tuned for locations and dates.

Filmmakers we’re now accepting entries for our 2025 program until April 1st, 2025. Submit your films here ([link removed]) .

** Iceland's Endangered Wave: Thorli
------------------------------------------------------------

Iceland's most consistent wave is threatened by a landfill project that would bury the wave. Thorli is located in the town of Þorlákshöfn and is Iceland’s most consistent surf break. It is also the heart of the country’s surf culture and a destination for surfers from around the world.

After protests by local surfers and a legal appeal, the project has been temporarily paused while The Environmental and Natural Resources Appeals Committee reviews the case. Unfortunately, the appeal was denied meaning the wave could be destroyed any day now. Local group BBFI ([link removed]) is leading the campaign and legal fight to protect Thorli.

** WSR Highlight: Ericeira, Portugal
------------------------------------------------------------
Ericeira, Portugal was dedicated in 2011 as the second World Surfing Reserve in the world. Within the 4 KM coastline of the reserve, there is a high density of outstanding surf breaks, including iconic breaks such as Ribeira d’Ilhas and Coxos, among others.
