We knew Trump would come after environmental protections, but John — this is worse than we imagined. His EPA chief just announced plans to slash 65% of the agency’s workforce.

Let’s talk about what that means. The EPA has 17,202 permanent staff and 1,540 temporary workers. Among them: Scientists who test for PFAS in drinking water. Investigators who uncover illegal toxic waste dumping and hold polluters accountable. Regulators who enforce air pollution laws so our kids and grandkids aren’t breathing in carcinogens.

If Trump gets his way, more than 11,000 EPA employees could be fired.

The fossil fuel corporations that spent billions to get Trump back in office will get exactly what they paid for: total deregulation. If they want to pump more pollution into our air or poison our water, there will be no one left to stop them.

This is a full-scale attack on environmental protections at a time when we need them more than ever.

Our best shot at protecting our communities from Trump’s attacks on climate progress isn’t in this GOP-controlled Congress — it’s in state legislatures, governor’s mansions, city councils, and public service commissions across the country. When the federal government fails us, local leaders can step up and enforce protections for our environment.

But we can’t elect these leaders without the grassroots power to back them up — and we’re running out of time.
