Today marks the end of February, Donald Trump’s first full calendar month of his second term. It has been a tumultuous month filled with outrageous lies, gratuitous cruelty and shocking cowardice. But we have also witnessed bravery, important victories and the emergence of a new opposition movement.
Even as the Republican-led Congress has willingly forfeited its constitutional power to Trump, federal judges have asserted their own. While the oligarch-controlled legacy media continues to bow and scrape, new independent media outlets are standing taller and gaining influence. And as some old institutions fail, new ones are rising in their place.
This is not to say everything is great—it is not. Democracy remains on the brink of a potential constitutional crisis as Trump’s administration flirts with disobeying court orders. The Department of Justice is already targeting Trump’s political opponents, and the GOP election subversion machine grinds forward toward the next set of elections.
Trump peddles fear because he wants us to give up. He promotes despair, knowing that hope fuels an effective opposition. He claims to be above the law, a king—because he knows he is weak.
The week that is ending has been like most since the election—a mix of good and bad, victories and defeats. Let’s get into it.
