Friend,
I’ll never be able to unwatch George Floyd’s last moments, as he pleaded with officers and said “I can’t breathe,” before losing consciousness.
Whether by gun violence or police brutality, Black people in America face the threat of being killed everyday merely for existing. George Floyd’s horrifying death is yet another example of the deep racial inequality and bias that perpetuates our country at the expense of black and brown bodies.
Like many of us, I am mourning. George’s death brings rage, pain, and reopens wounds. Black America is hurting and in need of healing — but together, we can take action to build up new systems that work for us.
Here at the Community Justice Action Fund, we are committed to uplifting actions led by frontline activists invested in the healing and sustainable future of our people.
We want to lift up ways to use your community power and take action in this moment:
Amnesty International: Take action now and call on USA authorities to make sure that all those responsible in the death of George Floyd are held accountable. Sign the petition here.
Support Local Groups:
Black Visions Collective believes in healing and transformative justice, including a future where all Black people have autonomy.
Communities United Against Police Brutality is a Twin-cities based organization that was created to deal with police brutality on an ongoing basis.
Reclaim the Block is calling on everyone to demand Minneapolis invest in real safety solutions like violence prevention, housing, and resources that prioritize marginalized communities. Sign their petition here.
Color of Change: Join the fight with Color of Change and demand #JusticeforFloyd by signing the petition that the officers who killed him are charged with murder. Text “FLOYD” to 55156 to stay in the know.
CJAF Call to Action with March for Our Lives: Call the Minneapolis District Attorney’s office at 612-348-5550 and demand justice for George Floyd’s murder.
Share Our Stories Event: Even though George was not killed by guns, he was killed by a system of violence that harms people of color. Join us June 1st at 1pm ET as we kick off Gun Violence Awareness month and hear from survivors leading across the country as they share their stories and ways you can take action to #EndGunViolence in communities of color. Sign up here.
National Day of Healing: In collaboration with LIFE Camp, Inc., Revolve Impact, Southern Vision Alliance, and many others, we will come together on June 19, 2020 to address the layers of trauma and violence that communities are experiencing; memorialize our loved ones lost; celebrate life, including the graduations, weddings, birthdays, and special occasions missed, and; learn techniques to stay healthy and well during these trying and difficult times. Register here to attend.
Finally, we are here for you and we won't back down from demanding change for and with our people. The “justice” systems we currently have aren’t working, and we will continue to demand change led by the people closest to the pain in our communities.
In solidarity,
Amber Goodwin
