80% of 2025 Oscar® Best Picture nominees include tobacco
Eight of the 10 films nominated for Best Picture at the 2025 Oscars® contain tobacco imagery, including “Anora,” “A Complete Unknown,” and “Emilia Pérez” which each feature young stars, according to a Truth Initiative analysis. On-screen smoking, which is often glamorized and portrayed as edgy and cool, persists despite well-established research that it influences young people to start using tobacco.

Local restrictions on flavored tobacco and e-cigarette products
Sales restrictions on all flavored tobacco products, including all types of menthol products, are gaining momentum at the local and state level. As of December 31, 2024, 412 jurisdictions and three Native American tribes have placed some type of restriction on the sale of flavored tobacco products, and of those, 147 have fully comprehensive policies that prohibit sales of all types of flavors across all products, including menthol/mint/wintergreen flavors that are sometimes exempted from flavor policies, at all retailers.

California: AB762 would prohibit the sale of all single use vapes in the state, and provides cities, counties and the state with the legal teeth to enforce that ban with fines starting at $500 per violation.

South Dakota: SB 54 would cut $3 million from programs for tobacco prevention in South Dakota. It is a 60% cut from $5 million to $2 million. On February 20, the Senate passed the bill. It now moves to the House for consideration.
