Legislative Update
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Can you believe how fast the 2025 session is flying by? It feels like we just started, but House Republicans are already deep into moving some great legislation. Our main focus this year is crafting the state’s new two-year budget, which is a big deal. In early March, we’ll get an updated economic forecast with all the numbers we need to really lock things in. That’s going to be the key to figuring out where we can distribute our resources to work for you, your family, and all of Minnesota.
I’ll be sure to keep you posted as soon as those figures come in. In the meantime, I’ve got some fresh updates from the House to share:

Seeing Progress on HF5267
Last April, the House Children and Families Finance and Policy Committee introduced House File 5267, a proposed budget bill aimed at strengthening early childhood development programs. One of the bill’s biggest allocations? A much-needed $15 million dollar investment to modernize the outdated Social Services Information System (SSIS)—the very software that over 6,000 workers across the state rely on to track and manage child welfare cases.
To put it into perspective, SSIS was first rolled out in 1999. That’s more than 25 years ago! Over the years, countless frustrations have piled up over the system’s limitations, making an upgrade long overdue. Fortunately, this bill is making its way through the legislative process and will soon be up for a hearing in committee.

A Special Guest at the Capitol!
1
With school out for Presidents’ Day, my son Zeb decided to tag along to the Capitol, joining us for a floor session—because what’s more exciting than a day off spent watching lawmakers in action? (Spoiler: Probably anything, but he humored me.)
He took in the debates, enjoyed a well-earned snack break, and got a front-row seat to the legislative process. Who knows—maybe he caught the political bug? Or maybe he just came for the snacks. Either way, it was great having him there!

Celebrating Our Future Leaders
1
Meeting with the incredible FFA members from District 11B during National FFA Week was truly a highlight! Seeing all the students in their blue corduroy jackets filled me with such pride—these young leaders represent the future of agriculture, hard work, and community service. Their passion and dedication to learning about leadership, farming, and agribusiness is inspiring, and I’m grateful for the chance to celebrate them. FFA plays such a crucial role in shaping responsible, service-oriented young adults, and it’s always a joy to support their efforts. Keep up the great work, and thank you for all that you do!

House Unanimously Passes Bill to Encourage State Agency Savings
I am excited to announce that this week, the Minnesota House unanimously passed House File 289, a bill carried by Rep. Duane Quam (R-Byron) to encourage state agencies to be more innovative and cost-conscious. The bill allows agencies to carry forward 50% of unspent funds from unexpected savings, rather than being forced to "use it or lose it." These funds can then be reinvested in projects that support the agency’s mission, with oversight from the Legislative Advisory Commission and Minnesota Management and Budget.
This smart, common-sense approach rewards efficiency and ensures taxpayer dollars are put to good use. A similar program ran from 2013 to 2018, and this new version aims to build on that success. With unanimous support in the House, it’s clear that good governance is something we can all get behind!
