February Take Five

Friend,

On a union-built stage with an audience of over 130 million people, Kendrick Lamar helped kick off Black History Month declaring: “The revolution’s about to be televised.” If you scroll through social media and headlines, those words seem to be manifesting into action across the country–in town halls, across mountains, and on Capitol Hill. And today, a grassroots movement has organized a widespread Economic Blackout

There is a clearer, collective understanding rising to a swell across our communities. Corporate bullies, billionaire bros, and corrupt administrations are officially on notice. Fragile as our democracy may be, communities are wielding power to protect the sale of our workers, safety, and basic human rights from the highest bidder.

Enjoy this month’s collection of headlines, victories, opportunities to take action, and stories of resistance in motion.

Whether you're participating in a boycott, rallying in the streets, or have your congresspeople on speed dial, we're all on the same page: corporate greed has infiltrated all aspects of our lives. But people power is growing everyday. Share and customize the "Stop Corporate Greed" post below to stand in solidarity as workers continue to go toe-to-toe with billionaires.

FROM GLOBAL LABOR JUSTICE: Over the past three months, the Fight the Heist worker activist committee in Indonesia, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and India organized a photo petition to Nike, resulting in 1,000 workers coming forward publicly for the first time–sending a clear message to Nike!

These workers know the risk of standing up to powerful companies and authoritarian systems, yet they are coming forward like never before to demand that Nike transform its supply chain to protect workers’ rights and pay living wages.

Now allies need to step up too. Please
sign the pledge to send a message to Nike in March and share the powerful image of 1,000 garment workers.

Fight the Heist is a campaign by our partners at Asia Floor Wage Alliance and Global Labor Justice. Learn more about the workers leading the fight in Teen Vogue, and watch their powerful video message to Nike.

🌹 Colorado JWJ joined Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition (CIRC) at the state Capitol and successfully KILLED SB 47 in committee. SB 47 would have brought back racial profiling, punished cities that refuse to help ICE tear families apart, allowed ICE to detain people seeking justice at courthouses, and expanded private detention for corporate profit. This is a huge victory that will keep Coloradan families safer!

🌻 Missouri JWJ and the Missouri Worker Center flooded the Missouri Capitol with allies to defend Proposition A, a minimum wage increase and paid sick days ballot measure that passed in 2024 with 57% of the vote. For now, their courage to stand up to anti-worker legislators has successfully protected Prop A and the will of the people.

🌸 The Providence nurses strike is over! After more than a year of bargaining, multiple strikes, and the dedication and hard work of nearly 5,000 frontline nurses, 94% of Oregon Nurses Association workers overwhelmingly voted to ratify tentative agreements and end the strike. Portland JWJ supported these caregivers on the picket lines and in their efforts to bargain collectively across the state.
