FSC Brings Adult Industry Debanking Issues To Congressional Hearing

Free Speech Coalition was proud to hear our Statement for the Record ( [link removed] ) on the debanking of our community publicly acknowledged by Ranking Member Maxine Waters as part of the House Financial Services hearing ( [link removed] ) entitled, “Making Community Banking Great Again” on February 5, 2025. We thank Representative Waters for being a champion for banking access, and to Senate Banking for prioritizing the harm done through “derisking.”

FSC’s submission will become part of the official Congressional Record, continuing the formal dialogue with Congress on this critical issue. Read more on our blog. ( [link removed] )

Changes To North Dakota AV Bill Force FSC To Withdraw Support

The Free Speech Coalition is disappointed by North Dakota legislators’ decision to abandon the common-sense approach ( [link removed] ) to age-verification originally proposed in SB 2380 ( [link removed] ). The bill would have verified the user’s age on a phone, tablet or other device, and made children unable to access to sites with material harmful to minors. This is the same approach currently being advanced in multiple states for social media.

The adult industry recognizes that device-based age-verification ( [link removed] ) is the only solution that can effectively prevent children from encountering adult content while protecting the privacy and constitutional rights of adults. We’re disappointed that legislators in South Dakota chose to prioritize the concerns ( [link removed] ) of ( [link removed] ) Big ( [link removed] ) Tech ( [link removed] ) over the needs of their constituents. UN Special Rapporteur: Porn Violates Human Rights

“Performer and Free Speech Coalition Industry Relations Advocate Lotus Lain, who spoke ( [link removed] ) in front of the Council in 2023 about sex workers' rights, took issue with Alsalem's characterization.

‘This type of dismissive statement from people who lived a sheltered life of diplomacy, higher education and access to a type of job security that many of us in the sex trade are not afforded really speaks to the nature of their bias,’ Lain told XBIZ. ‘They never agree to meet with anyone that has lived experienced outside of the trauma porn narrative of the sex industry that they would like to push.’” Read more on XBIZ. Porn Platforms Report EU User Collapse, May Dodge DSA Scrutiny

Several major porn platforms, including Pornhub, XNXX, and XVideos, report significant drops in EU user traffic, potentially exempting them from stricter Digital Services Act (DSA) requirements. While XNXX’s traffic remains above the 45 million user threshold, Pornhub and StripChat, with fewer than 45 million users, may no longer be considered Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs). If these user counts are confirmed, only XNXX would be subject to the full scope of DSA obligations. Read more on Euractive. ( [link removed] )

Pornography Sites Would Have To Verify Whether Users Are 18 Or Older If Canadian Bill Passes

The Canadian government is pushing an online safety bill that would require pornography websites to implement strict age verification for users. While framed as a measure to protect minors, these laws threaten privacy, free expression, and access to legal adult content. Similar laws in other countries have led to mass censorship, data security risks, and the shutdown of adult platforms. R ( [link removed] ) ead more on WJAC. ( [link removed] )

UK's Online Safety Act Moves Toward Age Verification On Porn Sites

The UK’s Ofcom has introduced guidance under the Online Safety Act, requiring adult websites to implement strict age verification measures to prevent minors from accessing explicit content. The proposed methods—such as facial age estimation, credit card checks, and photo ID matching—raise serious concerns about privacy, data security, and barriers to legal access for adults. Enforcement is expected to begin soon, with potential fines for non-compliance. Read more about Ofcom's plans to implement these measures. ( [link removed] )

How Antitrust Crusaders Brought A Porn App To iPhones

The EU’s Digital Markets Act is allowing the porn app Hot Tub to be available on iPhones in the region, highlighting the unintended consequences of antitrust regulations. While the law is aimed at increasing competition, it forces Apple to host content they previously restricted, including adult content. This case underscores the tension between platform control, government interference, and the freedom to host legal adult content. Read more on Reason. ( [link removed] )

Meta, X, And Snap Submit Joint Letter Signaling Support For Age Verification Bill

Meta, X, and Snap Inc. have expressed support for South Dakota’s SB 180, a bill that would require age verification before users can download apps. The companies argue it simplifies the process for parents and increases privacy protections for teens. However this raises important concerns about privacy and potential overreach in age verification policies. Read more on FoxBuisness. ( [link removed] )
