Dear John,
One month into the new administration, Donald Trump is already weaponizing the federal government to silence diversity in schools. With so much focus on his misguided plan to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education, GLSEN is raising the alarm about how the Department’s tools to enforce federal civil rights laws are now being turned against schools.
In just one month, political appointees at the U.S. Department of Education have been working to find ways to bless discrimination, instead of fulfilling their core job responsibility of enforcing against discrimination. These appointees have dismissed pending civil rights complaints, denied the discriminatory impact of book banning, and launched targeted investigations into lawful practices by school districts to support LGBTQ+ students.

These actions undermine the Department’s core civil rights mission and are happening before a Secretary of Education has even been confirmed by the Senate. Trump nominated Linda McMahon - a business executive with limited experience in education - and, just yesterday, senators advanced her nomination in a party-line vote.
But, in her hearing, McMahon demonstrated how she was not fit to serve. McMahon admitted she needed to learn more before she could answer senators’ questions, misrepresented court rulings on transgender students, and expressed support for policies that exclude LGBTQ+ students.
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: students need a champion who will fight for their future, not a crony who will work to dismantle protections. Before the full Senate votes, we need your help in getting the word out about how Linda McMahon should not be confirmed as Secretary of Education.
Take action today: tell Congress that Linda McMahon is unfit to serve in the Cabinet. [link removed]
We need you to help push back against these attacks in schools. GLSEN is working to raise our collective voice and build support for marginalized students and our network of teachers, chapters, and GSA student groups. As we continue to raise the alarm about the weaponization of the Education Department, help us protect the needs of LGBTQ+ students. Your support is crucial to our work.
