Dear John,
Since the Conservative’s botched deal with Europe, our young people have been locked out of opportunities on the continent.
Today’s reports of progress on a new Youth Mobility Scheme mark a huge victory for young people across the UK, offering them new chances for work and travel across the continent.
It’s also a victory for common sense. Expanding our existing youth mobility visas to cover European countries on a reciprocal basis would be a win-win and provide a much-needed boost to our economy, especially hospitality and tourism.
Liberal Democrats have been calling for a Youth Mobility Scheme for years. We know it's the right step for our country and we're glad the Government looks like it's finally listening to us.
For months the Labour Government inexplicably refused to countenance extending a scheme we have with Australia and Japan to our European allies. It’s good to see Ministers finally waking up to the overwhelming benefits of such a scheme.
We're looking forward to scrutinising the details of this proposal and will continue to hold the Government to account to make sure we get the best possible deal for young people here in the UK.
