What's the methane polluter fee?
[link removed]

Hi John,

A few years ago, we celebrated a monumental victory – the methane polluter fee – a bipartisan program that allows us to hold oil and gas companies accountable by charging them a fee for excessive methane pollution.

But now lawmakers want to repeal this commonsense rule altogether. Now it’s on us to defend it. But before we get to work, let’s take a moment to educate ourselves about this critical tool in the fight against climate change.

To find out more about the methane polluter fee, the fight ahead and what you can do to defend it by watching our explainer video! It takes less than a minute.

Why focus on methane pollution?
Addressing methane pollution is the fastest, most cost-effective way to immediately slow global warming – period. That’s because methane is extremely good at trapping heat in our atmosphere. In fact, it has more than 80 times the warming power of carbon dioxide for the first 20 years it’s in the atmosphere (and is currently responsible for 25% of global warming as we know it).

What does the fee do exactly?
It’s actually pretty simple. If oil and gas companies do not cut their methane emissions, the EPA issues them hefty fees. This encourages companies to hold themselves to industry-set targets that keep more product in the pipeline and out of our atmosphere.

What can I do to help?
You can start by educating yourself and others by sharing our email or video explainer.
