Hi John ,

Welcome to the latest New Pennsylvania Project newsletter!

We often see local, municipal and judicial elections receive less turnout than general elections, but their impact can be felt within our everyday lives. Your local elections can affect issues like a pothole on your commute getting fixed, or how resources are delegated to local parks and schools.

Local, municipal and judicial elections are also the last line of defense against attacks on our rights from the White House. Since returning to the White House, President Donald Trump has faced numerous legal challenges over his executive orders, including ending birthright citizenship, freezing government funding, and reducing the federal workforce.

When Pennsylvanians voice their vote in judicial elections, they help shape the courts that make decisions about these issues. These decisions impact our lives for years to come.

When we empower our communities to vote in all elections, we are helping shape a better future.

The work we do matters!

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro Sues Trump Administration To Release Over $3 Billion in Federal Funds

"Trump’s Office of Management and Budget issued a Jan. 27 memo announcing a funding freeze for federal government agencies and quickly rescinded the memo two days later. However, the administration clarified that the funding freeze was still in effect, pursuant to the previous executive orders Trump issued regarding federal department and agency spending."

SAVE Act Would Undermine Voter Registration for All Americans

"If enacted, it would devastate voter registration while disenfranchising tens of millions of eligible American citizens. More than 21 million American citizens don’t have these documents readily available, according to survey data. But the SAVE Act would likely adversely affect far more Americans than the data suggests. Many might not have noticed how broadly the bill could apply."

Married Women Could Be Stopped From Voting Under SAVE Act

"The SAVE Act does not include proof of name change or a marriage certificate as acceptable proof of identity. This could be vital for married women with a birth certificate that does not match their current legal name."

How Trump citizenship orders could affect Native Americans

"As President Trump's executive order ending birthright citizenship faces multiple legal challenges, some tribal members are concerned the U.S. Justice Department is using a Supreme Court case that denied Native Americans U.S. citizenship in the 1800s to justify the president's position."

Explainer: Are Trump's mass firings of federal workers legal?

"Donald Trump has moved to dramatically shrink the size of the federal workforce and mass terminations have already begun at several U.S. government agencies. But a tangled web of laws and regulations around hiring and firing government employees could mire Trump's efforts in lawsuits and delays. Here is a look at Trump's actions so far and the legal obstacles he could face in downsizing the 2.3 million-strong civilian federal workforce."
