Earlier this week, Republicans in the House of Representatives took the largest step yet in pushing their far-right agenda by passing the extreme MAGA budget bill. I had a front row seat, and here’s how it all went down:
At first, it appeared like the bill didn’t have enough votes to pass. As the roll call got closer, Speaker Mike Johnson threw in the towel, cancelled the vote and sent us home for the night.
But minutes later, they reversed course. I was told the vote was back on and we needed to rush back to the House floor, where Republicans barely passed their bill on a party-line vote of 217-215. It was extremely close!
This budget plan tells you everything you need to know about MAGA’s priorities. It includes giant tax breaks for the wealthiest 1% of Americans while making severe cuts to programs like SNAP food assistance and Medicaid - which nearly 15 million Californians depend on for their health care. This massive handout for the rich comes at the expense of the most vulnerable Americans, while raising the debt limit by $4 trillion. (I guess they never really cared about the national debt after all!)
John, I’m angry. All we needed was 2 votes to block this terrible bill, but Democrats didn’t have enough power. We have to win back the House in 2026 to stop these MAGA Republicans from having total control.
I’ll keep you updated as this bill moves to the Senate,
- Josh
