[1]Mark Kelly for Senate
Friends — I’m beginning to think these guys don’t actually know what they’re doing!
(That was sarcasm)
Over the weekend, Elon Musk sent out an email to every single federal employee telling them to give five bullet points on what they did in the last week, or be fired. Now, he doesn’t have the authority to do that, but that’s another topic for a separate discussion.
That order fell apart immediately. Some department heads told staff to comply. Some told them not to comply. President Trump told them to comply. The Office of Personnel Management — the actual federal office that manages federal employees — told staff not to comply.
It’s a mess.
I come from the Navy, and I was stationed on the USS Midway. That ship carried around 4000 Sailors and Marines at full capacity. It took a massive amount of coordination and expertise to stay on mission, launch and return aircraft, run the engines, and keep everyone fed, healthy, and in fighting shape.
The federal government is about 2 million people, and they serve about 340 million Americans. They are health care providers, they work on infrastructure, national security, environmental protection, energy. It is an immensely complicated operation of critical importance, and these staff face indiscriminate layoffs, program cuts, and conflicting orders.
If this kind of thing happened in the Navy, Sailors and Marines could get hurt or killed.
If this continues from the top down under President Trump and Elon, millions more people will suffer. That’s the truth.
Republicans in the House and Senate are working to muscle through their budget right now. They’re going to try to codify what President Trump and Elon are doing through the federal budget process. They want to cut hundreds of billions of dollars from Medicaid, food support, and other essential programs to pass trillions in tax breaks for rich people.
I am going to do whatever I can to stop them.
I need you with me.
