Email from Los Angeles Police Protective League Daily News & Updates Law Enforcement News Boyle Heights hit-and-run leaves pedestrian in critical condition Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who left a pedestrian in critical condition in Boyle Heights. On Feb. 5, the victim, a 49-year-old man, was crossing 1st Street, west of Fresno Street shortly before 9 p.m. As he crossed the road, an oncoming Honda Odyssey minivan struck the man, leaving him in critical condition. Surveillance footage from the Los Angeles Police Department showed the driver did not stop to check on the injured man and instead, continued speeding away. Paramedics transported the man to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition. The suspect’s vehicle is a silver, older model (1999-2004) Honda Odyssey. A reward of up to $25,000 is available to anyone who provides information leading to the suspect’s identification, apprehension and conviction. “Drivers are reminded that if they become involved in a collision, they should pull over and stop as soon as it is safe to do so, notify emergency services, and remain at the scene to identify themselves,” LAPD said. KTLA 5 CHP pursuit of a possible reckless driver in Winnetka ends in deadly shooting, Los Angeles police say The pursuit of a possible reckless driver turned deadly after officers from the California Highway Patrol opened fire in Winnetka early Wednesday morning. The Los Angeles Police Department is leading the investigation of the shooting that took place around 2:30 a.m. on the 7200 block of Sunny Brae Avenue. The LAPD said officers were pursuing the driver and followed them into the cul-de-sac of a residential area when the shooting took place. Security camera footage from a neighbor's house captured the sound of when shots were fired. It is unclear what led up to the shooting. No one else was injured during the incident. CBS 2 LAPD Serves Search Warrants at Huntington Park City Hall Law enforcement authorities served search warrants Wednesday at Huntington Park City Hall, but few details were immediately available on the nature of the investigation. Video from the scene showed police vehicles at City Hall, with yellow police tape stretched across some areas of the building. A source connected with the city told the Los Angeles Times warrants were also served Wednesday at the homes of Mayor Karina Macias and Councilman Eduardo “Eddie” Martinez, and two former council members were also targeted. The sourced told the paper the probe appeared to involve alleged misuse of public funds, some of them involving an aquatics center project. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the investigation. MyNewsLA TV news helicopter hit with laser while covering police shooting Sky5 encountered a scary situation early Wednesday morning when someone shined a laser at the helicopter. The blue laser hit the chopper as Sky5 was covering a police shooting in Winnetka. It appears the laser was emitted from a home near Payeras Street and Mason Avenue in Chatsworth. Shining a laser at an aircraft is a federal crime, according to the FBI. “If you point a laser and interfere with the operation of an aircraft, that’s a felony,” the FBI said. “The crime carries a maximum of 20 years in federal prison and a quarter of a million dollars fine. In addition, the FAA can impose a civil penalty of up to $11,000 for each violation.”Authorities have been targeting those who shine lasers at aircraft, especially in California, which led the country in such incidents in 2023. KTLA 5 Russian national charged with biting ICE officer during DTLA arrest The Justice Department charged a Russian national on Wednesday with assaulting a federal officer during an arrest in downtown Los Angeles earlier this week. The complaint alleges that Maksim Zaitsev bit the officer's hand so hard that it broke the officer's finger. Maksim Zaitsev of Costa Mesa was charged on Wednesday with assault on a federal employee resulting in bodily injury. The alleged attack happened on Feb. 25. According to the complaint, two Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers were serving an administrative warrant downtown that morning. The officers arrested Zaitsev. The officers handcuffed Zaitsev and tried to bring him in for processing. That's when they said Zaitsev started to fight back, and during the struggle, Zaitsev allegedly bit one of the officers on the pinky. The alleged bite was so hard, it broke the skin and even broke the officer's finger, according to the DOJ. FOX 11 Suspect accused of planning ‘mass casualty attack’ on Texas officers similar to 2016 Dallas ambush Texas authorities arrested a 21-year-old suspect after uncovering an alleged plot to carry out a “mass casualty attack” against police officers in Corpus Christi, KOMO reported. The suspect was taken into custody on a warrant for terroristic threats following an FBI investigation, according to the report. The suspect was allegedly planning an attack similar to the 2016 ambush in Dallas, where five police officers were killed and nine others were injured. The Corpus Christi Police Department credited the FBI and other agencies for their cooperation in preventing the potential attack. “The Corpus Christi Police Department greatly appreciates the assistance of our local, state and federal partners in helping to keep our community safe,” the department stated. “Their support is vital to helping us accomplish our mission to reduce crime, the fear of crime, and enhance public safety.” Further details regarding the arrest have not been released, and the investigation remains ongoing. PoliceOne Video: Driver repeatedly runs over Florida officer, pedestrian A Lauderhill Police Department officer was hospitalized after being intentionally run over while assisting with an accident investigation, 6 South Florida reported. According to witnesses, the driver of a blue Nissan Rogue struck both the officer and a pedestrian, then reversed and ran over them multiple times before fleeing the scene, according to the report. “It was intentional,” witness Diondre Noel told 6 South Florida. “He clearly tried to kill him.” The driver was later stopped and taken into custody, according to the report. The officer, whose injuries reportedly included leg and facial damage, was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. The pedestrian was also hospitalized. Police obtained video footage from a nearby Tesla that captured the attack. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities from both Sunrise and Lauderhill police departments involved, according to the report. PoliceOne Public Safety News Fire in Single-Story Hyde Park Home Knocked Down A fire in a Hyde Park residence was knocked down Wednesday, authorities said. Smoke was reported around 11 a.m. Wednesday, emerging from the single-story house in the 5100 block of Seventh Avenue, between 50th and 51st Street, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The fire was located in the rear room, and fully extinguished in 10 minutes, the department added. All occupants had safely left the residence, and no injuries were reported. MyNewsLA Orange County infant arrived in Los Angeles from Korea with measles: officials The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health stated that a case of measles has been confirmed in a person who traveled to LAX while infectious last week and Orange County officials have clarified their identity. According to the L.A. County Health Department, the infected individual arrived on Korean Air Flight 11 at Tom Bradley International Terminal B on Feb. 19. Flight 11 is one of Korean Air’s nonstop Seoul to Los Angeles routes. In a statement issued Tuesday, the health department clarified that individuals who were at Terminal B between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on the 19th “may be at risk of developing measles due to exposure to this traveler.” “In collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control, passengers assigned to specific seats that may have been exposed on Korean Airlines Flight 11 on Feb. 19 will be notified by local departments of health,” Los Angeles County officials said. “These agencies work together to investigate communicable disease exposures on international flights to the United States.” KTLA 5 Southern California gets major warm up with above normal temperatures Southern California is expected to get a major warm up with temperature highs reaching 15 to 20 degrees above normal Wednesday, weather officials say. KCAL News Meteorologist Amber Lee said a high-pressure system is hovering over the region causing warm and dry air. Coastal communities are experiencing dense fog Wednesday morning, but clouds will clear, and the sun will come out. The National Weather Service said parts of the valleys could expect temperatures in the 80s with some lower 90s. A heat advisory has not been issued since weather officials said record temperatures for the day are not that high. The warming trend will continue into Thursday before conditions cool off Friday. A low-pressure system is right behind the current system. "Max temps will be the main talking point on Friday… a switch to onshore flow will bring 12 to 18 degrees of cooling to LA/VTA counties and 8 to 12 degrees over SLO/SBA counties," the NWS said. CBS 2 Local Government News LA Council Unanimously Agrees on Quarterly Wildfire Fiscal Recovery Reports The City Council instructed its staff Wednesday to provide quarterly reports regarding fiscal recovery efforts from January’s wildfires. Council members received a report Wednesday from the City Administrative Officer that detailed initial costs incurred by the city totaling $358 million during the first few days of the firestorm. On a 14-0 vote, with Councilman Bob Blumenfield absent, the council instructed the CAO to provide updates on damage estimates, as well on the status of special fund loans and other funding sources that may be used to front recovery costs. Staff were also asked to communicate on the status of Federal Emergency Management Agency reimbursements. According to the CAO’s report, the city incurred a cost of $6.6 million for emergency protective measures, $350 million for damage to city buildings, equipment and infrastructure, and an additional $1.2 million for debris removal. MyNewsLA $17 million announced to expand public parks in Los Angeles County The Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District announced 13 beneficiaries Tuesday of Measure A competitive grants totaling $17 million in funding toward increased access to green spaces across the greater Los Angeles area. The Competitive Grant Program is aimed towards “bridging the equity gap and invest in eligible programmatic or capital projects consistent with or similar to those identified in the Parks Need Assessment,” and “have their own cyclical award schedules, ranging from annual to once every four years,” according to RSD website. Grants are funded by "Measure A," a 2016 voter-approved parcel tax of 1.5 cents per square foot that generates revenue specifically for open spaces. RSD is a special district of L.A. County that collects property tax revenue and grants it to cities, nonprofits and other agencies to support parks, open spaces and recreational programs. This year's grants will fund the creation and expansion of approximately 623 acres of new park land. Over 50% of that funding will be directed toward communities with “high needs” for increased spaces.
